WIP Wednesday - Trying Something New

I while back i discovered a blog called Amy's Free Motion Quilting Adventures wherein Amy Johnson shares her quilting adventures and a ton of really helpful tips and videos, including how to use long-arm rulers with your domestic machine!  Starting this past Monday, Amy is hosting a McTavishing quilt along for the month of March, with a new post and linky party each Monday.

In case you don't know, McTavishing is a FMQ design pioneered by professional longarm quilter Karen McTavish.  I've been eyeing this design lately and have really been wanting to try it, but I've been pretty intimidated!

Amy's quiltalong is just the thing to help me get over my fear!  This first week I'm practicing drawing McTavishing on an outline of a quilt block I plan to use in an upcoming quilt.  The defined shapes make the practicing easier by giving me boundaries and such.  So far, my drawings are pretty rubbish.  My spacing is too irregular, and I find that my curves tend to flatten out with my outlining.  That's okay, though.  I have to start somewhere!

I'll keep on practicing for the next few days and then I'll move on to practicing with stitching.  I can't wait to see my progress at the end of the month!

It looks like a great start! The curviness is hard for me too. If you look at Karen's woork, her spacing isn't completely uniform either. I think it helps give the design some movement.

Thanks for linking up!

I like the irregular spacing. It gives it more movement!
I need to do some more drawings before I can say I understand the pattern. I just jumped in and started on fabric, ha ha!
