Friday Finish

Madrona Road baby quilt for Wells #2

this week's finish kills two birds with one stone.  first, it's for the Madrona Road Challenge hosted by Michael Miller Fabrics for The Modern Quilt Guild.  The Houston Modern Quilt Guild will be showing off our finished items at our next meeting on February 16.  but this quilt is also destined for someone special.  he doesn't have a name yet, but he's the second child of my co-worker and his wife, due to make his presence known to the world right around easter.

M is a carpenter, and i let him pick the backing fabric for the quilt.  he picked Blueprint from the Mr. Fix It line by Dan Morris for RJR.  it looks great, and it's so perfect for a boy quilt! the plus sign fabrics are all from Madrona Road, except the two solid blues, which are both kona cottons.  the binding is the white text print from madrona road, with a small piece of the kona lake inserted to get enough length. the background is kona ash.

i knew i wanted curvy quilting to soften the straight lines and angles of the piecing, so i chose to go with a continuous spiral, offset from the center.

you can see how i left a few inches at the center of the spiral unquilted.  i wanted to draw the viewer's eye to the super cute donkey!  don't look too close, though, as i still need to remove the circle i traced to start the spiral!  after that i just followed the previous line with the edge of my walking foot.  around and around and around and around!

i'm so pleased with how this turned out!  i wasn't as in love with the fabrics as i had first thought i might be, but i really love how this quilt turned out.  in fact, i may need to make a similar, larger one to keep for myself.  good thing i have lots of fabric left over!

Really cute! Love how the quilting revolves around the donkey. Concentric circles? That can't have been easy!

Oops. Not concentric, just read more carefully.
