Friday Finish - The One with a Bazillion Squares

It all started right around midnight one Friday, when M was out of town fishing.  I tend to keep weird hours when he's away and I don't have to worry about disturbing his sleep.

I was itching to sew, but didn't really have anything I was working on.  That's when I thought about the pattern by Katy Jones I'd seen in Issue Five of Love Patchwork & Quilting!  I dug out my magazine and a stack of low volume fabrics and started cutting.  And cutting.  And cutting.  There's 900 squares in this pattern, folks!

It wasn't long before I had several blocks pieced, and I had to make a decision on the color of the scissors.  I was leaning towards a lovely turquoise, and had even pulled out my precious, hoarded Jay McCarroll fabrics from his first two lines.  Then a friend convinced me to go with black like the pattern.  Since I knew I had tons of black prints in my stash, I went for it.

It took me a week and a half's worth of sewing to get all the blocks assembled, and along the way I had plenty of cat help.

I chose to quilt it in a simple crosshatch diagonally through each square, to go with the simplicity of the design.  All total, I finished two weeks after I started, and I"m in love with my finished quilt!  I used a large scale newspaper print I bought last fall in Istanbul for the backing, and I'm so glad that now my quilt will always remind me of that lovely trip.

Ozzie has already given his paw of approval to the quilt, too!

Finished size: Approximately 60" x 60"

Pattern: Katy Jones, in Love Patchwork & Quilting

Machine pieced and machine quilted in a crosshatch design by me.
