September 12 in '12 Challenge - Link up & Giveaway

welcome to the September installment of the 12 Quilts in ’12 Challenge! I’m hosting here on my blog, but be sure to check out the finishes of my co-hosts, safieh and liz! We hope you will join in!

before i tell you about this month's finish, i'd like to share a picture of my finished quilts for the first three-fourths of the year:

finished quilts - 1st, 2nd & 3rd Quarters 2012

ok, so ringo isn't a finish, but i needed another pic to fill in the mosaic, and isn't he just getting so big!

i'm pleased with my accomplishments when i can see them all together like this, even though i was feeling like the past six weeks i hadn't gotten much done.

last month, i worked quite a bit on a birthday surprise for M, but i didn't finish it, and his birthday's not until mid-November anyway. i also worked on some smaller projects, but no actual quilt.  until the last weekend of the month, that is!

despite being pretty sick, i wanted to work on at least one wheelchair quilt for the Houston Modern Quilt Guild fall charity project.  we're making wheelchair quilts and walker bags to distribute before Christmas to nursing home residents here in Houston who have no family that visits them or cares for them.  our charity sew-in was this past saturday, but i wasn't well enough to go.  instead, i pulled out the bag of coordinated fabrics i'd picked up last monday and set out to see what i could do.

i had a variety of prints in creams, aquas, browns and light greens.  in order to use as many of the pieces as i could, i decided on an easy layout of fat bricks staggered with skinny bricks.

i had to add a fair amount of fabric from my stash, but i had no trouble finding prints that coordinated with what was in my baggie.  i also pulled from my stash for the backing, but was able (just barely!) to get the binding from a piece of included fabric.

i quilted using a serpentine stitch across each row, and i zigzagged the binding on by machine, since this will likely get washed a lot i want it to hold up.

in fact, this went together so quickly that i dug through my stash and made a second quilt.

this time i cut my binding strips at 2.25" instead of 2.5" and was much happier with how the machine application looked.

I'm trying to finish my charity quilt this weekend so I can link up. I had the top pieced at the sew-in. I really need to get back on the wagon and get some finishes out there!
