spiderwebs (the good kind!)

i joined an online
spiderweb quilt block swap last week, and saturday i got started on my blocks. i knew i had several large ziploc bags full of scraps in my craft room that i hadn't yet given away, so i dug those out. i found a bag that was 1 1/2" strips, so i pressed a lot of the strips, and set those aside. i couldn't find any solid white in my stash (note to self: order kona white tonight from fabric shack!) but i did find a white on white print to use for the kites. i made a template and then cut out as many kites as i could. i was able to finish one block before it was time to take my husband's son out for a belated birthday dinner with my husband's side of the family. i got one more done while M and his son played xbox after dinner. while these blocks are a little time consuming, they're a great way to use up your scraps, and it is pretty mindless sewing, since it's paper piecing.

in other recent quilting news, i finished my wonky house block for elaine for the month of april in the sew 2 speak bee, and my circle of geese block for the month of march for the same bee and got both of those posted to their recipients.



i also put together (most of) a quilt top using a variation on this pattern. i had several coordinating FQs from about a decade ago. i wasn't particularly fond of them, and i'd just been moving them around a lot. when i saw this pattern, though, i thought it might work with my fabrics. i didn't have enough prints to make a quilt the size of the pattern, so i modified it to use fewer rows of "waves" and put a large border on both sides. i wasn't going to put a border on the top and bottom, but the recipient voted on adding a border. she didnt know that she will be getting the finished quilt for mother's day next month! she recognized the fabrics as some she had purchased for me years ago, and exclaimed that she loves them. looks like the mother's day present is going to be a big hit. of course, i don't have quite enough of the pink solid left, so i need to make a stop at joann's and pick up a quarter yard.

i also finished the top of another variation on this same pattern, but i have no photos. that top is large enough that i need M to act as a human quilt-hanger to get a decent photo.

this friday is the Friday Night Sew-In hosted by Heidi and Bobbi. this is a really great way to get motivated and set aside a little just-for-you time to finish up your sewing/quilting/whatever project. i think i'll use my time to quilt my Quilts for Kids quilt top and maybe get the binding done, too. i found some cute fabric in my stash that i'd like to use to make another quilt to send back, too, for another kid.
